What is a Virtual Colonoscopy

MSCT Virtual Colonoscopy is a test that combines a MSCT, sophisticated image processing computers, with skilled radiologists to actually recreate and evaluate the inner surface of the colon. The MSCT scanner provides the x-ray images, the image processing computers create the 3-D display for the final interpretation.

Because the object of the test is to find very small polyps, which once removed will never become cancerous, it is necessary be sure the colon is free of all residue and fecal material so that there is no confusion in the results of the test. This cleansing is achieved by undergoing a preparation on the day before colonoscopy .

On the day of exam you will lie on MSCT cradle. A thin red tube (about the diameter of a rectal thermometer) is placed in your rectum, through which air is introduced into the colon. The air is necessary to distend the bowel allowing the polyps to "stand out" from the normal surface. You will hold your breath while the machine sweeps over your abdomen as you lay on your back. The procedure is repeated with you lying on your stomach. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes. Following this, you are free to leave the MSCT and go back to work or play golf or whatever you may wish to do. Because the colon is distended with air the patient may have some mild cramping. Of course, there is a comfortable bathroom onsite.

The information from the MSCT scanner is then shipped over a network to the 3-D image processing computer where the radiologist evaluates the images for the presence of polyps. A report and images are then sent to the referring doctor within 24 hours who can then discuss the findings with the patient
