Bowel Preparation prior to Virtual Colonography

Follow the instructions below carefully prior to MSCT Vitual Colonography (click here for a Malay or Chinese translation of the instructions)

2 Days before Colonogram:

Eat a low fibre diet. Avoid meats, vegetables & fruit. Porridge & noodles in clear soup are recommended.

Day before Colonogram

Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch & dinner. Clear liquids include all the following that are not coloured red or purple. Strained juices without pulp (apple, white grape, lemonade), water, clear soup, black coffee or tea, carbonated & non carbonated soft drinks, 100 plus & plain jelly (no added fruit or toppings).

Diabetic patient on oral diabetic medication are to omit their pre-lunch & pre-dinner time diabetic medication.

On the morning of the colonogram, you should only be passing clear or lightly coloured fluid. If you are still passing solids or dark fluid, please notify staff on arrival.

Bowel preparation:

Purchase a Fleet Phospho Soda Kit from the pharmacy.

First dose: 12 noon : Add 45ml of Fleet Phospho Soda to half a glass of clear liquid & drink. Follow immediately with a glass of clear liquid. This prep often works within 30 minutes but may take as long as 3 hours. Remain close to toilet facilities as multiple bowel movements may occur.

Drink at least 4 glasses of water thereafter.

Second dose: 7pm : Add 45ml of Fleet Phospho Soda to half a glass of clear liquid & drink. Follow with as much clear liquids as possible (at least 4 glasses).

Not to eat or drink after midnight.
