Scoliosis and SpineCor
Introduction

SpineCor is the first and only truly dynamic brace, which provides a progressive correction of Idiopathic Scoliosis from 15° Cobb angle and above.
SpineCor preserves normal body movement and growth and allows normal activities of daily living.
It is worn comfortably and easily under clothing.
Increases patient's treatment acceptance leading to better compliance.
The SpineCor System was designed for the treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis only (from 15° and above).
Its efficacy for treating neuromuscular, neurological or other types of scoliosis is unknown; generally non-idiopathic scoliosis is contraindicated.
Scoliosis
Idiopathic scoliosis is principally a sideways (lateral) curvature, combined with (rotation) a corkscrew like twisting effect of the spine. The progression of curves is dependant on several factors but is mianly influenced by age (growth velocity/potential) and flexibility of the spine.
Idiopathic Scoliosis is not only a 3D deformation of the spine, but also involves:-
- Postural disorganization.
- Growth disharmony.
- Neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction.
Parents Guide to Scoliosis

The SpineCor Dynamic corrective brace is made up of two sections:-
- The first section consists of the pelvic base (1), the crotch bands (2) and the thigh bands (3. Its role is to act as an anchoring point and support for the actions applied to the patient’s trunk by the corrective elastic bands.
- The second section consists of the bolero (4) and the corrective elastic bands (5). This is the part designed to make the correction of the scoliosis curve.
The fitting of the corrective bands is specific for each patient and depends on the type of curve.
You should wear a bodysuit under the SpineCor brace:-
- For hygienic reasons; it will help to keep the brace cleaner longer.
- To add comfort; it will provide a barrier between the brace and your body, reducing the likelihood of the brace rubbing.
- To facilitate going to the toilet; you only need to detach the snaps of the crotch bands and those of the bodysuit.
Treatment
In order to fit the brace, during the first visit we will perform the following evaluations:-
- Clinical evaluation - to evaluate your growth pattern and any postural abnormalities.
- X-ray evaluation - recent X-rays of your spine need to be studied to evaluate the type of curve and its potential for progression. Some new, pre-bracing X-rays may need to be taken, depending on the films already available.
- Evaluation of postural disorganization - Visual evaluation of your spine and simple measurements using plumbline, protractor and ruler.
- SpineCor Assistant Software (SAS) - a computer will record data from all evaluations and calculate your specific curve classification necessary to fit your brace. The SAS will also specify your brace fitting details.
Once the brace is fitted, we will evaluate the changes to your spine and posture. A new X-ray with brace is required to confirm the results.
At the end of the visit, we will explain how to fit and take off your brace (don’t worry, it is very easy!)
You will have to visit your orthotist/therapist for regular readjustments to the brace for the duration of your treatment. Your orthotist will inform you about your next appointment date.
SpineCor
- Usually, the SpineCor Dynamic Brace is worn for 20 hours per day. The 4-hour period should be taken in two or more intervals during the least active part of your day. The brace must be worn while sleeping.
- The length of treatment will depend on the severity of the curve and its evolution, but it is always a minimum of 18 months.
- It may be suggested that you undergo a physiotherapy program in order to complement the action of the SpineCor brace.
- To optimise the dynamic effect of the brace, we encourage you to perform any type of sport WEARING the brace (except for swimming).
- You may also be prescribed a shoe lift at the time of brace supply.
